History of the Market Square in Bruges

Bruges' Market Square has a rich history dating back to the 10th century. Originally it served as a marketplace for merchants from the region and grew to become the social and economic center of the city. The first wooden halls for merchants appeared around 1220 on the south side, replaced by a stone building after a fire in 1280. On the east side, the Waterhalle was built in the 13th century as a storage place for goods from Damme.

Large events, jousts and tournaments were held in the marketplace, as well as executions, which attracted a large crowd.

Between 1807 and 1810, the square was called "Place Napoléon," then "Grote Markt," later shortened to "Markt"
