Bad weather in Bruges: what does our itinerary look like if it rains?

Let's be honest: Belgium has weather
You've been planning this trip for months. You've booked your hotel, mapped out your favourite restaurants, and found the perfect private guide. Then you check the forecast. Rain. Possibly all day.
Here's what most tour operators won't tell you upfront: rain in Bruges is not a disaster. It's Tuesday. It happens. What matters is how your guide handles it — and whether you've been told what to expect before you even show up.
At Crusade, bad weather is not a surprise. It's a scenario we plan for. Every tour has a version for grey skies.
What happens to a walking tour in the rain?
Walking tours in Bruges work well in the rain. The city's medieval architecture creates natural shelter: covered archways, church porches, the covered market gallery at the Burg. A good guide uses the city's layout, not just its highlights.
Here's what changes on a rainy day:
The route gets smarter. We shift the sequence of stops to move between covered spots more efficiently. You still see the same highlights — the Markt, the Basilica of the Holy Blood, the Beguinage — but we time the open sections differently.
The indoor stops get more depth. Bruges has no shortage of indoor culture: the Church of Our Lady with Michelangelo's Madonna and Child, the City Hall with its Gothic Hall, the Bruges Beer Experience. On a sunny day, some of these are optional detours. On a rainy day, they become the backbone of the tour.
You get a better story. Bruges was built for grey weather. The city's golden age — the 15th century, when it was the commercial capital of Northern Europe — happened under the same skies you're standing under now. There's something fitting about seeing it in the rain.
A light drizzle is never a reason to cancel. We walk.
What about bike tours in the rain?
Bike tours are a different calculation. Light rain? We ride. A good rain jacket and the right mindset, and a wet bike tour through the Bruges countryside is genuinely memorable.
But when weather turns severe — heavy rain, strong wind, thunderstorms — safety comes first. In those cases, we don't just cancel and send you home. We adapt.
Alternative programme for bike tours in bad weather:
If conditions make cycling unsafe, we switch to a private walking tour that covers the historic centre at the same depth. You still get the private experience, the historical narrative, and the personal attention — on foot instead of on wheels.
We confirm by 8:00 AM on the morning of your tour whether conditions require a switch. You'll know before you leave your hotel.
When is a full refund possible?
We don't hide this in the fine print.
A full refund is available when:
Weather makes the tour impossible to run safely — this applies primarily to bike tours in extreme conditions, where no reasonable walking alternative can be offered.
You cancel within the window stated in your booking confirmation — generally 48 hours before the tour. Check your confirmation email for the exact terms.
What we don't do: cancel a walking tour because it's raining. Rain is not extreme weather. If you've booked a walking tour and it rains, the tour runs — adapted, covered where possible, and just as thorough.
If you're unsure about conditions on your travel day, message us the evening before. We'll give you a straight answer.
A word on Bruges in the rain
There's a reason photographers come to Bruges in November. The canals reflect the light differently when the sky is overcast. The crowds are thinner. The cafés are warmer. The city feels like it belongs to you.
Some of the best tours I've given happened on days that started with rain. The group came in expecting to make the best of a bad situation, and left saying it was the highlight of the trip.
Bruges is a medieval city. It was built to last through centuries of Belgian weather. So were its stories.
Before your tour: what to bring
If rain is in the forecast, come prepared:
- A waterproof jacket (not an umbrella — they're awkward in narrow streets and useless in wind)
- Waterproof shoes or ankle boots
- A small backpack for your camera and belongings
We'll take care of the rest.
Book your private tour — whatever the forecast
Every Crusade tour is private, adapted to your group, and built around your pace. Rain or shine, you get the full experience: in-depth history, personal stories, and a Bruges you won't find in a guidebook.
